Every broker on LinkedIn this quarter is bragging about record trading volume. Almost none of them are telling you what book that volume sat in.
CFI posted $5.34 trillion for H1 2026, up 101% year on year. Impressive number, and it is not nonsense. But FM Intelligence's own Q1 2026 data shows a 17 fold spread in per account volume across the named broker cohort, weighted average $4.30 million per account, Hantec Markets at the top with roughly 30,000 active accounts crossing a trillion dollars a quarter. Retail CFD turnover has gone from 2.7% of BIS reported global FX volume in 2020 to 14.1% by the end of 2025. The industry is genuinely bigger. That is not the same as saying every broker posting a bigger number is making more money doing it.
Volume is a liquidity story before it is a profit story. Higher ticket flow gets you better tiers from your LPs. Tighter raw spread, better rebates, lower cost basis on every trade you route through. On the A book side, that compounds cleanly. Same client behavior, thinner effective spread, higher margin. That part of the brag is real and worth bragging about.
Volume on the B book is exposure, not revenue, until the position closes. A broker warehousing retail flow is not printing profit with every trillion crossed. It is printing a bigger number that has to survive the next NFP print, the next surprise rate decision, the next session where every client is long the same instrument at the same time. High volume through a thin or understaffed dealing desk does not scale your edge. It scales your tail risk.
Here is the part nobody puts in the press release. Gross volume tells you the size of the funnel. It tells you nothing about hedging cost, nothing about correlation risk sitting on the book at any given moment, nothing about whether the desk running that flow is three people or fifteen. I have sat on both sides of this. I know exactly how good a quarter looks when the flow is clean, and exactly how fast that quarter reverses when it is not.
None of this means volume is vanity. Volume toward your LPs is leverage. Volume on well managed A book flow is genuine margin expansion. The industry is not lying when it says it is bigger than it was five years ago, the BIS numbers back that up. The lie, when there is one, is letting a reader assume bigger automatically means better run.
So next time a broker posts a record volume number, do not ask how big it was. Ask who was on the other side of it, and whether that desk was built to survive the day the flow does not behave.

What changed
A trillion dollar quarter and a well run dealing desk are two different achievements. Only one of them shows up in a screenshot.
