Why "Claude or GPT experience" just became a hiring requirement — and what it means for anyone still cold calling manually

How AI fluency became a hiring filter — saturated inboxes, AI in the workflow, the limits of pure-AI outreach, the screening line, and the operator move

  1. 01 · Saturation

    Manual cold outreach stops working

Average cold email reply rates fell from 8.5% in 2019 to 3.4% now. Every SDR team flooded the same inboxes; the spray-and-pray playbook is mathematically dead, not just unfashionable.

  2. 02 · Adoption

AI moves into the acquisition workflow

AI tools stop being a novelty and become part of how outreach is run — while the platforms prospects live in start becoming ad and acquisition surfaces themselves.

  3. 03 · Limits

Pure AI underperforms; one human plus AI does not

Pure-AI outreach programmes underperform hybrid setups on closed-won and most hit deliverability walls inside 90 days. One rep paired with AI produces the output of 5 to 6 reps working solo — the staffing maths, not the robot, is what changes.

  4. 04 · Filter

AI fluency becomes a hiring requirement

Acquisition and growth roles now list experience with AI tools as preferred. The record gives it 12 to 18 months before that stops getting you noticed and starts screening you out for its absence.

  5. 05 · Move

    Build the human-plus-AI workflow

Run research, sequencing and first-touch personalisation as an AI-assisted workflow rather than a full-time manual job. None of that layer requires a licence, which is why it automates first.

Stated in the record — cold email reply rates 8.5% in 2019 versus 3.4% now; pure-AI programmes hit deliverability walls inside 90 days; one rep with AI producing the output of 5 to 6 solo reps; a 12 to 18 month window.

How AI fluency turned into a hiring filter in acquisition, in five stages as the record describes them. First, manual cold outreach loses effectiveness: average cold email reply rates fell from 8.5 percent in 2019 to 3.4 percent now, after every SDR team flooded the same inboxes. Second, AI tools move into the acquisition workflow rather than sitting beside it, with the platforms prospects live in becoming acquisition surfaces themselves. Third, pure-AI outreach has limits: pure-AI programmes underperform hybrid setups on closed-won and most hit deliverability walls inside 90 days, while one rep paired with AI produces the output of five to six reps working solo — one growth marketer running research, sequencing and personalisation workflows covers what used to take a four-person pod. Fourth, the hiring line moves: acquisition and growth roles now list experience with AI tools as preferred, and the record gives it 12 to 18 months before the absence of AI fluency screens a candidate out. Fifth, the operator move: build human-plus-AI research, sequencing and personalisation workflows instead of treating manual outreach as a full-time strategy — the record notes none of that first-touch work requires a regulatory licence, which is exactly why it automates first.

Open any acquisition or growth role at a broker, exchange, or fintech right now. Scroll past the base pay and the location. There's a new line that wasn't there two years ago: "experience with Claude, ChatGPT, or similar AI tools preferred." That's not a nice-to-have anymore. That's the filter.

Three things that happened recently that explain why.

One: cold email reply rates have collapsed. 8.5% average reply rate in 2019. 3.4% now. Every SDR team on earth flooded the same inboxes with AI-written outreach, and the market punished them for it. The old playbook — 200 emails a day, spray and pray — is mathematically dead, not just unfashionable.

Two: OpenAI opened ChatGPT to paid advertisers for the first time ever, on July 22. Walmart, Accenture, John Deere, BCG are already building inside that. When the platforms your prospects live in start becoming ad and acquisition surfaces themselves, "I cold call all day" stops being a growth strategy and starts being a resume gap.

Three: the actual performance data on AI SDRs is in, and it's not the doomsday story people expected — it's worse for headcount, in a different way. Pure-AI outreach programs underperform hybrid setups on closed-won, and most hit deliverability walls inside 90 days. But one rep paired with AI is now producing the output of 5 to 6 reps working solo. Nobody's getting replaced by a robot. They're getting replaced by a colleague with better tools.

Here's the part I'll get flak for: cold calling and manual cold outreach, as a full-time job description, are dead. I've sat in enough acquisition planning calls this year to watch heads of growth at brokers and exchanges quietly rewrite headcount plans. Nobody says it in the all-hands. They say it in the budget meeting. One growth marketer running Claude or GPT workflows for research, sequencing, and personalization is doing the volume that used to take a four-person SDR pod. That's not a hot take, that's a hiring plan I've seen with my own eyes at three different companies this quarter.

This is the part regulated finance always underestimates about itself: we think we're insulated because of compliance and licensing friction. We're not. Compliance slows down the product, not the acquisition funnel. The outreach, the lead research, the sequencing, the first-touch personalization — none of that requires a regulatory license. It requires a prompt and a workflow. That's exactly the part getting automated first.

You have 12 to 18 months. After that, "AI fluency" stops being the thing that gets you noticed in an interview and becomes the thing that gets you screened out for not having it — the same way nobody asks if you know Excel anymore, they just assume it and move on.

So here's the only question worth sitting with this Monday: when the acquisition head at your company finally runs the math on what one person plus Claude can do, do you want to be the person running that workflow, or the headcount it replaced?
